SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry is partnering with the U.S. Green Building Council New York Upstate Chapter to host the 6th Annual Green Building Conference on Thursday, March 27 and Friday, March 28, 2008. This year, the event will also be combined with the BEST (Best Practices in Environmental and Green Building Strategies and Techniques) certificate program that serves members of the design community; the contracting community; K-12 educational leaders; elected officials; and others planning and implementing green building technologies and programs to improve K-12 education.
From 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28th, I'll be giving a presentation entitled, Bold Landscaping — Dramatic Impact and Reduced Maintenance. Using the conference site as a case study, I'll illustrate how replacing 15,000 square feet of turf, above right, with nearly 10,000 shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, and spring-flowering bulbs can reduced maintenance costs while creating a visually stunning landscape that relates to the seasons and can provide plant materials for other county facilities, above left.
